Pat McGrath is a a self taught makeup artist. She has become one of the most influential makeup artists in the world. You probably recognize her from her most recent launch at Sephora or have seen her work on runway shows and magazines. But what you might not know about this remarkable and accomplished woman is that she comes from humble beginnings.
Pat’s story is one that is inspiring especially to those who are trying to break into to the makeup artistry world or are striving to become entrepreneurs. She is proof that you do not necessarily need to go to school for makeup artistry to be a great makeup artist.
Pat has was born in 1970 and raised by her mother in the UK. Her mother a Jamaican native, was into fashion and trained her to, look at the patterns, check fabrics and look for make-up. Being a black woman in the UK during that time there was not much makeup for black skin tone so Pat’s mother encouraged her to mix colors.
Just like most people Pat worked a 9 to 5 job as receptionist as she built her business. McGrath’s career breakthrough came while she was working with Edward Enninful (then fashion editor of i-D magazine) in the early 1990s, when her innovative use of colour “brilliantly solved the world’s ennui with grunge” and helped launch i-D to a position of international importance.
Some of Pat’s Accomplishments
- In the 2013 Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year Honors List, McGrath was “named an MBE, or Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the fashion and beauty industry.
- Designed Armani’s cosmetics line in 1999 and in 2004 was named global creative-design director for Procter and Gamble, where she is in charge of Max Factor and Cover Girl cosmetics, among other brands.
- Created her own makeup line, Pat McGrath Labs, October 2015
Pat McGrath has accomplished so much, these are just a few of her many accomplishments. What I like most about Pat is, that despite all the high profile clients and projects she has worked on she still maintains a humbleness about which I love!
So for all you entrepreneurs out there and aspiring makeup artists get inspired by Pat McGrath and follow your dreams!
